Reflect on the
wording of the statement. The phrases 'Powerful images' and 'heighten
our experience' are central.
Note the possibility
of referring to a performance you have seen. This allows you to consider
the imagery within the language of the play and the actual images that
you see on stage (actors / set / lighting / sound etc.). It allows for
an interesting personal response. Worth exploring!
With this 'textual
support' option in mind, plan your response carefully.
Make a brief list
of the key images within the text of the play: Eyes /clothes/animals … have
you some quotations?
If you have seen
a performance, what powerful images do you remember?
Imagine a performance;
how might it be staged?
Now ask yourself
how these images highlight certain themes explored in the drama.
Why did Shakespeare
have his characters speak in such a visually suggestive/symbolic way?
What stage directions
are demanded by the language or suggested by Shakespeare?
