The epicentre is the point on the earth’s surface directly above the focus where the damage is greatest.

The fault is the line of weakness where the plates meet. Earthquakes occur along a fault line, e.g. San Andreas Fault, California.

One way to reduce the impact of an earthquake in an urban area is to construct buildings that can withstand the force of an earthquke. Buildings in these areas need to be built on roller foundations, which allow them to move but not collapse during an earthquake.
