Soluble: When a substance dissolves in a liquid it is said to be soluble.

Insoluble: When a substance does not dissolve in a liquid it is said to be insoluble.

(b)
The silver nitrate dissolves in water (soluble), which separates it from silver chloride (insoluble).

Method:
  1. Set up the equipment, as shown in the diagram.
  2. Slowly and carefully pour the mixture into the filter paper.
  3. Allow time for the silver chloride to separate from the silver nitrate solution.
  4. The silver chloride will be left in the filter paper and the silver nitrate solution will be in the conical flask.

Residue: Silver chloride
Filtrate: Silver nitrate solution

(e)
Pour the silver nitrate solution into an evaporating basin and place it on a tripod over a lighted Bunsen burner. The Bunsen burner will heat the evaporating basin until the water has evaporated. The silver nitrate will be left in the evaporating basin.
